Re: Appointment of Professor Jonathan Freedman as Deputy Provost

We are very pleased to advise that the Executive Committee recently approved the appointment of Professor Jonathan Freedman as Deputy Provost, effective
July 1, 2008 until February 28, 2009.

Most recently, Professor Freedman has served as Vice-Provost, Student Life, in addition to his role as Provostial Advisor on Tri-Campus Matters.

As Deputy Provost, Professor Freedman's mandate will be to act as the senior representative of the Office of the Provost on various committees, boards, task forces, and working groups. He will serve as the Provost's assessor on the Council of First Entry Deans, and assist more generally with academic liaison, and help as needed with formulation and implementation of shorter-term actions arising from the Towards 2030 planning initiative.
More generally, Professor Freedman will help with policy advice and strategic oversight of academic portfolios as required.

Professor Freedman's extensive experience in central, divisional and departmental administration will be very valuable given other transitions in the Provost's Office this year.  In this regard we note that Professor Freedman came to the University as Chair of the Department of Psychology.
Other academic administrative roles at the University of Toronto have included Acting Vice-Dean, Research and Graduate, Faculty of Arts and Science, Acting Vice-Principal Academic and Dean at University of Toronto Scarborough, and Acting Vice-President and Principal at University of Toronto Scarborough.
