|Re:||Appointment of Robert Cook as Chief Information Officer|
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Robert (Bob) Cook as Chief Information Officer (CIO) effective May 12, 2008.
The creation of the position of CIO was one of the recommendations arising from the Report of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Review Committee that was released in the fall of 2007. Another main recommendation of the Report was that the institutional level ITS [Administrative Management Systems (AMS), Computing Network Services (CNS), Student Information Systems (SIS) and Strategic Computing] would report to the CIO. [The Report is available on-line at http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/committees/reviews/its.htm.]
Bob is currently serving in the role of Chief Information Officer, OISE. He has held this role since 2004. He was previously the Co-Director (Technology), Education Commons, OISE/UT from 1996 - 2004. He has been primarily associated with initiatives that harness information and communications technology to the academic agenda. He was one of the key individuals involved in conceiving and developing OISE's Education Commons.
The Education Commons is a unique partnership between the U of T Library and OISE through which OISE seeks to ensure that every aspect of its information technology - academic and administrative - is strategically aligned to academic intent and is readily accessible to faculty, staff and students.
From 1990 - 1996 he was the Head, Technology for Enhancing Learning Centre, at the then Faculty of Education, U of T.
Previous to his career at U of T, he was Coordinator and Teaching Master in the Courseware Design & Production Program at Sheridan College from 1985 to 1990. From 1982 to 1985 he was the Coordinator and Instructor in the Media Resources Program at Capilano College in British Columbia, and from 1976 to
1981 he was the Lab Supervisor in the same program.
In addition to his work at OISE, Bob has played a leadership role in the University of Toronto in ITS through his involvement on the Steering Committee and as a presenter for the annual Tech-Know File conference, and through participation on numerous ITS-related committees both at the institutional level and at the divisional level. He has also been involved in a number of institutional and divisional level task forces and committees focused on other matters, including human resources, communications, and budget.
Bob has a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa, College of Education, Division of Instructional Design and Technology, a Diploma in Media Resources from Capilano College, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Toronto.
