RE:  Ontario Research Fund – Research Excellence Program:  Round 2 Competition

The Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation has just released their call for Round 2 proposals.  Details, including guidelines, application forms and FAQs are available at:  http://www.mri.gov.on.ca/english/programs/orf/re/program.asp

Please notify MayLiza Baak of the GRIP office (m.baak@utoronto.ca) as soon as possible if you are seriously considering an application.  LOIs (along with a completed and signed GRIP Application Attachment) are due at the GRIP office no later than February 23rd, to be submitted to MRI by the GRIP office for March 2nd.  The GRIP office will work with applicants on the full proposals and will establish internal deadlines to allow for final institutional review and endorsement.  Final proposals will be submitted by the GRIP office to MRI for the May 31st deadline.

MRI states that while proposals in all disciplines are eligible, they particularly encourage sustainable, collaborative projects, conducted in Ontario, that address:

  • improving the environment (while maintaining or enhancing Ontario's economic productivity) through clean, green technologies
  • ways to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources through alternative energy technologies

Proposals must include plans for commercialization, IP ownership and disposition, and youth outreach/mentorship activities. Strong participation by industry is a significant part of the ORF-RE’s mandate and applications with meaningful private sector commitment will be given additional consideration in the assessment process.

Minimum support provided by the ORF-RE to a single project is $1 million and the maximum support provided to a single project from a single eligible institution is $10 million.  MRI will contribute a maximum of 1/3 of the total project costs, with 1/3 of the remainder coming from the applicant institution(s) and 1/3 from the private sector.

I encourage you to bring this funding opportunity to the attention of your faculty colleagues, and to direct any questions you may have to MayLiza Baak (978-7605).
