Re:  Extension of appointment of Prof. Safwat Zaky as Vice-Provost, Planning & Budget

I am pleased to announce that the Governing Council has approved the extension of the term of Professor Safwat Zaky as Vice-Provost, Planning & Budget for an additional two-years ending June 30, 2009.  Professor Zaky was initially appointed to this position for a four-year term ending June 30, 2007.

Professor Safwat Zaky has been serving as Vice-Provost, Planning & Budget, since July 1, 2003.  In this capacity Professor Zaky has had responsibility for some major initiatives, most notably the development and implementation of the new budget model and planning for graduate expansion.  These two initiatives in particular have been complex, multi-year exercises that have involved extensive consultation and coordination.  The extension of his term will allow Professor Zaky to continue work on the implementation of these initiatives.

Professor Zaky received his BSc in Electrical Engineering and a second in Pure and Applied Mathematics both from Cairo University.  He received his MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto.  Professor Zaky first joined the University of Toronto as a faculty member in 1973 and became Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1993.
