|RE:||Amendment to the Policy on Appointment of Professor Emeritus|
Governing Council has amended the Policy on Appointment of Professor Emeritus in order to allow Professors who have held named chairs become a Professor Emeritus they be able to also use the title of the named chair as emeritus as well. This represents a manner of enhancing the visibility of named chairs. As an example, a Professor who has held the title of "Smith Chair in Ancient History" would become the "Smith Chair Emeritus in Ancient History". As noted in the policy, only named chairs approved under the Policy on Endowed Chairs, Professorships, Lectureships and Programs are eligible.
Such appointments will be considered at the same time as a request for a Professor Emeritus appointment is made. The request should be made in writing by the Dean to the Provost. Appointments will be reported to the Academic Board for information. Requests should include the full name of the faculty member, the date of retirement, the named chair held, and the dates that the chair was held.
