RE: Appointment of Professor George Baird, Dean, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor George Baird, as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design (FALD) for a 4 year term, beginning July 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2008.

Professor Baird is currently the G. Ware Travelstead Professor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.  He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Toronto.  He subsequently did postgraduate research at University College, London. He received an AM (Hon.) from Harvard University in 1994.  Professor Baird was an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Toronto from 1968-1975 and Professor from 1976-1993.  Professor Baird is also a partner in the Toronto based architecture and urban design firm of Baird Sampson Neuert Architects Inc.

During his career, Professor Baird has focused on issues of architectural design, design history and theory, and urban design.  In design, for example, his recent studios have focused on the social and political aspects of the design of public space, and on that of housing constructed in existing medium density residential neighbourhoods.  Professor Baird is the author of a major book on the designer Alvar Aalto (Thames & Hudson), of The Space of Appearance (MIT Press) and of the forthcoming A New Theory of Public Space.  He has also written numerous articles addressing issues of architectural theory and has co-edited three volumes.  Professor Baird is currently engaged in the preparation of a series of profiles of notable figures in the field of architectural theory since 1968.

Professor Baird was elected Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 1986.  He has won the Canadian Architect Award on several occasions for his professional projects.  In 1994 he won the Governor-General’s Award for Architecture for Cloud Gardens Park, Toronto.  In 2000 he won the da Vinci Medal of Ontario Association of Architects.

Professor Baird has experience in University administration.  He has been Chair of the former Architecture department of the University of Toronto and has served as the Director of the MArch I and MArchII degree programs at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University since 1995.

Professor Baird will assume the deanship at a time in the life of FALD that offers tremendous opportunities to move the Faculty forward.  He brings to the position of Dean his considerable experience as an important scholar of architecture and award-winning practitioner.  The Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design has seen a period of notable renewal under the leadership of Dean Larry Richards.  Dean George Baird will build upon its accomplishments and ensure the continuing vitality and high quality of its faculty and student contributions to architectural theory and criticism, architectural practice, and the lively and ongoing debates around architecture and urban design in the City of Toronto.
