Re: Task Force on Public Policy Studies

In July 2001 Provost Adel Sedra announced the creation of a Task Force on Public Policy Studies at the University of Toronto, chaired by Professor Carolyn Tuohy.  The Task Force was charged with exploring how the University of Toronto may best realize its potential to be a key national and international leader in public policy studies.

I am pleased to receive the report of the Task Force, which outlines a strategy for developing our strength in this area.  The report is available online at:

The proposals have the support of all the members of the Task Force, representing a broad range of divisions of the University.  The proposals are consistent with the broad vision of Stepping UP.  In particular, a multidisciplinary, multi-faculty approach is presented which could become a model for other initiatives.  The proposed programs will support our goals of providing national and international leadership and that of outreach in our research and teaching to the Greater Toronto Area, the province, Canada, and countries abroad.

I would ask that you consider the recommendations of the Task Force in developing your own plans.  I draw your attention to recommendation 2.

In order to move forward with the recommendations of the Task Force, we will need to ensure that the appropriate resources are in hand.  Efforts to secure resources from external sources are underway.  We look forward to working with you on the implementation of this initiative once such funding is in place.
