Re: CUPE 3902 Unit 1 - Election to Continue Working

The University has been bargaining intensively with CUPE 3902 Unit 1 in order to reach a fair and reasonable renewal collective agreement. We believe that our latest offer meets those criteria. We are disappointed that while a tentative agreement unanimously approved by the Unit 1 bargaining team was reached late Thursday night, Unit 1 members who attended a meeting Friday afternoon voted not to send the agreement to the full bargaining unit membership for ratification. CUPE 3902 Unit 1 is now on strike.

The University has indicated to CUPE 3902 Unit 1 that it intends to continue to operate during the strike and that it will make every effort to minimize the impact of the strike on its students.

The University will respect the decision of CUPE 3902 Unit 1 members who choose to continue to work during the strike.

If you choose to continue to work, please submit the completed online election form (available through Employee Self-Service) as soon as possible. In addition, please inform your Chair and supervisor that you intend to continue to work as soon as possible.

If you voluntarily choose to continue to work, the University will continue to employ you in the course(s) or program(s) in which you were working prior to the strike. The wages and benefits applicable to such work will be as set out in articles 22 and (to the extent applicable) 26 of the expired collective agreement. When a new collective agreement is entered into its terms will apply to work being done by you at that time.

We understand this is a difficult situation for all involved – our students, staff, members of the bargaining unit who elect to continue work, and those who go out on strike. We will respect whatever choice you make.

For the latest on this situation, please consult the Provost's site, also available through the University homepage under ‘Announcements'.
