Re: Mr. John F. Monahan Appointed Warden, Hart House

I am pleased to advise that the University Affairs Board of Governing Council has approved the appointment of Mr. John F. Monahan as the Warden of Hart House effective August 4, 2015 until June 30, 2020.

John brings to this role a range of experience and skills that equip him well to assume this leadership position at Hart House. He joins the University of Toronto from The Mosaic Institute, where he has served since 2008 as the inaugural Executive Director. Under his leadership, the Mosaic Institute has become a nationally-recognized “think and do” tank focused on diaspora engagement, inter-community dialogue and the development of young Canadians into peace-focused global citizens.

Before joining Mosaic, John practiced labour, employment and immigration law with a major international law firm; served as Consul (Economic Affairs-Ontario) at the Canadian Consulate-General in New York following the events of 9/11; and led the expansion of the Government of Ontario’s global network of trade and representation offices as Ontario’s first Director of International Representation and Research.

A past Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recipient, John remains an active volunteer in his community, having served with organizations involved in the arts, cancer care, settlement services for newcomers to Canada, and global affairs, among others. He currently sits on the Advisory Councils of the Canadian Arab Institute and the Institute for Diaspora Research and Engagement at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.

A two-time graduate of the University of Toronto, John received his BA in International Relations from Trinity College, his MPA from Dalhousie University, his Diplôme d’Ētudes françaises (2e degré) from l’Université des Sciences Humaines de Strasbourg, and his JD degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

I am delighted that John has accepted this position. Please join me in welcoming him back to the University as the new Warden of Hart House.
