Re:  Extension of Period for Review of Unit Workload Policies

The University of Toronto Workload Policy and Procedures for Faculty and Librarians (WLPP) provides that academic units will review their Unit Workload Policies every three years. Since most units completed their Policies over the spring of 2012, it is timely for units to be reviewing their Unit Workload Policies and many may have begun that process.

In order to assist units in the review process, the Office of the Vice-Provost, Faculty & Academic Life, will be offering best practices workshops over the next few months. In addition, policy changes agreed to in the Special Joint Advisory Committee process that have recently received governance approval will need to be considered by units when conducting their reviews, as will further changes relative to the Teaching Stream that will be taken through governance in the final cycle of 2014-15.

Finally, revisions to the University-level WLPP that guide the unit process have been proposed by the University of Toronto Faculty Association in the Article 6 salary and benefits process found in the Memorandum of Agreement and continue to be under discussion.

In view of all of the above, UTFA and the University administration have agreed that the three-year period for review of the Unit Workload Policies be extended until the fall term. The new timeline for review of Unit Workload Policies means that proposed revisions to Unit Workload Policies (as per 2.8 of the current WLPP) are now due November 1, 2015, with approval or rejection of Unit Workload Policies by the relevant Dean, Provost (or designate) due by November 15, 2015.
