Re:  University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award
University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships

I am very pleased to announce the creation of two new institutional teaching initiatives: the University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award and the University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships. Teaching excellence is fundamental to the mission of the University and these initiatives recognize the significant achievements of our faculty. The Fellowships also provide an opportunity for pedagogical development that will be of direct benefit to our students and key to our continued success.

The Early Career Teaching Award recognises faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement and teaching innovation. This award is open to assistant professors in the tenure stream and lecturers in the promotion stream who are within the first five years of their academic appointment, and have completed two years of teaching at the University of Toronto. Up to four awards of $3,000 each will be offered annually. Please visit the University of Toronto Early Career Teaching Award webpage on the Provost’s website for information on the award and guidelines to prepare a nomination package.

The Teaching Fellowships will run as a pilot for academic year 2015-16. The two Fellowships (for a Senior Lecturer and a Lecturer in the promotion stream) will provide funds for teaching release and are designed to develop and cultivate leadership and mentoring skills, and encourage capacity-building to support teaching effectiveness, innovation and research. The Fellows will engage in a pedagogical project in an institutional priority area. Please visit the University of Toronto Teaching Fellowships webpage on the Provost’s website for information on the Fellowships and guidelines to prepare a nomination package.

The Early Career Teaching Award winners and the Teaching Fellows will be determined by a selection committee chaired by the Vice-President and Provost (or Designate). The deadline to receive nominations is February 13, 2015.

Enquiries regarding the Award and Fellowships should be directed to Kim Derrick, Special Projects Officer, Office of the Vice-President and Provost at 416-946-0075 or awards.provost@utoronto.ca.
