Re:  Appointment of Professor Edward M. Iacobucci as Dean, Faculty of Law

I am delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the appointment of Professor Edward Iacobucci as Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto for a five-year term, beginning January 1, 2015, and ending December 31, 2019.

Edward Iacobucci is currently Professor, Associate Dean Research, and Osler Chair in Business Law at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He started at the Faculty of Law in 1998; since then he has been Visiting Professor at New York University Law School in 2007, Visiting Professor at University of Chicago Law School in 2003 and a John M. Olin Visiting Fellow at Columbia University Law School in 2002. Prior to joining the Faculty of Law, Professor Iacobucci was the John M. Olin Visiting Lecturer at the University of Virginia in 1997-98 and served as Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada for Mr. Justice John Sopinka in 1996-97.

Professor Iacobucci has a lengthy history of service to the University and the community through various administrative and leadership appointments, including being an active member of the University of Toronto Governing Council, a Fellow-in-Residence at the C.D. Howe Institute, and a past President of the Canadian Law and Economics Association. He contributes significantly to the scholarly and teaching excellence of the Faculty. His areas of interest include corporate law, competition law, and law and economics. He was the recipient of the first Mewett Award for Excellence in Teaching at Faculty of Law in 2000 and was a joint winner with his co-authors of the 2002-03 Doug Purvis Memorial Prize in Canadian economic policy for The Law and Economics of Canadian Competition Policy.

Professor Iacobucci received his B.A. (Honours) Economics from Queen’s University, M.Phil. Economics from the University of Oxford, and LL.B. from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Professor Iacobucci brings to the position of Dean a comprehensive understanding of the strengths and challenges of the Faculty and a progressive vision for the future. He has a celebrated dedication to teaching, a strong commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and societal engagement, and a highly collaborative leadership style. Please join me in congratulating Professor Iacobucci on his appointment.

Finally, on behalf of the University and the Faculty, let me thank Professor Jutta Brunnée for stepping up to the role of Interim Dean of the Faculty of Law.  She has done a marvellous job of stewarding the Faculty during this time of leadership change.
