We are delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of the Academic Board has approved the reappointment of Professor Rick Halpern as Vice-Principal (Academic) and Dean of the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2019.
Professor Halpern has overseen an unprecedented period of growth and transformation at UTSC. Under his leadership, UTSC has developed exciting new academic programs, renewed its focus on student recruitment, and built innovative international partnerships.
Since joining the University of Toronto in 2001 as the first Bissell-Heyd-Associates Professor of American Studies in the Department of History, Professor Halpern has served the University in many administrative capacities. He has served as the Director of the Centre for the Study of the United States at the Munk School of Global Affairs, Principal of New College, and Vice-Principal (Academic) and Dean of UTSC.
As a specialist in modern U.S. history, Professor Halpern has written extensively on race and labour in a number of national and transnational contexts. He earned his BA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and his MA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Upon completion of his doctorate in 1989, he joined the Department of History at University College London, first as Lecturer and then as Reader.
Please join us in congratulating Professor Halpern on his reappointment.
