PLEASE DISTRIBUTE IMMEDIATELY TO ALL INSTRUCTORS IN YOUR UNIT
It has come to my attention that incorrect statements are being made on flyers which are being distributed on campus promoting participation in the Student Day of Action.
My memo of September 20, 2009 (http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/public/pdadc/200910/20.htm)
states that "faculty members, WHERE POSSIBLE, not penalize students for non-attendance at classes on that day and, WHERE POSSIBLE, to permit students the opportunity to complete an assignment or test at another time if the student's participation in the campaign necessitates this" [Emphasis Added]. I also indicated the following:
"The decision to grant dispensation to students of course must remain in the judgment of individual faculty members. I fully recognize that compelling academic considerations may well make dispensation impossible."
I trust that this will clarify my request to instructors. I will consider the wisdom of making any such requests in the future given this year's misrepresentation.
