New Passport Policy for Travel to USA
Re: New Passport Policy for Travel to USA
On January 23, 2007, a new U.S. policy-The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-will come into effect. This policy requires all persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda to present valid passports. It is important to note this new policy affects US citizens visiting or living in Canada.
The second phase of the WHTI will include travel to the United States by all modes, including land and sea and will come into effect as early as January 1, 2008 and no later than June 1, 2009. The United States has yet to release the rules for land and sea travel; however, a valid passport will be required for all modes of travel under WHTI.
