Update on UTFA Salary and Benefit Negotiations
We are writing to update you on the status of salary and benefit negotiations with UTFA.
The University and the Association exchanged proposals in late January. Two weeks after that meeting, we made a proposal to UTFA with respect to a process for addressing some of the issues, to which UTFA agreed and on which we have indeed been following up. Further meetings are planned.
As you know, the Memorandum of Agreement sets out a process that can include mediation and arbitration. Based on the substance of the proposals from UTFA and from the University, we mutually agreed at our January meeting that it was likely that we would require the assistance of a mediator. We further agreed that we should move ahead to identify someone acceptable to both parties. UTFA’s counsel and the University’s counsel engaged in discussion and we subsequently jointly agreed to ask Martin Teplitsky to assume the role of mediator and arbitrator – a role that he has carried out for us previously. It is our understanding that Mr Teplitsky’s office is now working with our respective legal counsel to identify dates for the mediation. The University team will, of course, be available throughout the summer to engage in the process.
Lastly, we want to emphasize that we remain committed to working with UTFA in a collegial and collaborative manner in order that we may reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
