RE: Appointment of Dr. Thomas Mathien as Interim Director of TYP

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thomas Mathien as Interim Director of the Transitional Year Program for a six-month term, from July 1 to December 31, 2006.

Dr. Mathien entered the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto in 1966 after completing a one-year on-campus program for students without ordinary entry qualifications. He was the first member of his immediate family to attempt a university degree. He received a B.A. in Philosophy (at St Michael's College) in 1970, and completed a Ph.D. in the field at the University of Toronto in 1978. That September, he began as a part-time faculty member at the Transitional Year Program. Since then he has taught in TYP and, on an occasional basis, for the philosophy programs on all three UofT campuses. He was involved in organizing the Steps to University Program, run through TYP, in 1992 and has been its coordinator (and an occasional instructor) since then.

Dr. Mathien brings to the position of Interim Director experience and sensitivity to the qualities that make the Transitional Year Programme unique. I know you will join me in welcoming him to this position.
