Accessing Blackboard Courses

PDAD&C #14, 2006-07

MEMORANDUM

TO:   PDAD&C
FROM:   David Farrar, Deputy Provost and Vice-Provost, Students
DATE: September 14, 2006
SUBJECT:  DATA REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCESSING BLACKBOARD COURSES
______________________________________________________________________

Please forward this message to the person in your department who makes administrative changes, and/or submits grades to ROSI to update the data.

This September the University will begin using the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) and Portal. The initial user group will include all WebCT users, current users of the old Blackboard system, select Faculties and Departments and a number of small pilot groups from across the university. A second, larger group of users will begin using the system in September 07. By September 08 we expect most all instructors who use an LMS to move to the Blackboard system.

Blackboard interfaces with the University’s password/authentication system (UTORauth) and the Student Information System (ROSI) to provide access to Blackboard, and to assign instructors and course coordinators (where applicable) to courses.

The following requirements are necessary for access to courses in Blackboard:

  • an active Personnel Record in the Human Resources Information System (HRIS);
  • an active UTORid record; (same as the codes for accessing UTORmail);
  • a record in ROSI identifying the course(s) that the instructor/coordinator teaches.

To ensure that instructors and course coordinators are able to access their Blackboard course(s), it is necessary that the Course Code and instructor’s/coordinator’s name(s) be linked with the Personnel Number in ROSI. If this information is not available, Blackboard will be unable to determine the correct instructor/coordinator, and the course will appear to be unavailable until the assignment is corrected. Please ensure that instructor/coordinator names are entered into the ROSI database as soon as that information becomes available (before the September session begins) or contact the person in your department who makes administrative changes, and/or submits grades to ROSI to update the data.
