|RE:||Review of the University of Toronto Art Centre|
The University of Toronto Art Centre, located in the Laidlaw Wing of University College, has been operating in its current form and from its current location since 1996. A board of trustees drawn from the University and the external community has overseen the management and activities of the Art Centre from its inception. All works of art owned by the University came under the general oversight of the U of T Art Centre Board in 2001, with the exception of those in the Hart House collection. The purpose of the Centre has been “to assist the University in fulfilling its academic mission of becoming an internationally significant university with undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of excellent quality.” Since 1996 the Art Centre has increased significantly in size, in the quality of its space, the size of its collections and in its level of activity. It is therefore timely to review the place and role of the U of T Art Centre, how well it has been able to fulfill its mandate and how to respond to challenges and opportunities it faces. More information about the Art Centre can be found on its website: http://www.utoronto.ca/artcentre/.
We are conducting an internal review of the U of T Art Centre as a first step; subsequently a group of external reviewers will be invited to give their appraisal. Members of the internal review committee are: Professor Paul Gooch, President, Victoria University; Professor Marc Gotlieb, Chair, Department of Fine Art; and Professor Ken Bartlett, Director, Office of Teaching Advancement. The terms of reference for the review are posted on the Provost’s Office website at http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/English/University-of-Toronto-Art-Centre-Review.html.
We welcome comments and suggestions from interested persons. These should be submitted before March 1, 2006 to Rosanne Lopers-Sweetman, Director, Special Projects, c/o Office of the Provost, Room 225, Simcoe Hall, 27 King’s College Circle, University of Toronto (firstname.lastname@example.org; Phone 416-978-8994; Fax 416-978-3939).
