This is to inform you that the Province has just released information on its new “Early Researcher Award” (ERA) program – a replacement for the Premier’s Research Excellence Awards (PREA) program. ERA aims to help promising Ontario researchers, who are within the first five years of the start of an independent academic research career, build their research teams of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research associates. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve Ontario’s ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent in high-priority economic areas. Please see GRIP’s ERA website at:
http://www.research.utoronto.ca/grip/era.html which includes links to the government website.
Like its predecessor, ERA is a matching award providing up to $100K from the Province based on a match of $50K from the applicant’s institution or private sector partners. The program has been established with an initial $30 million allocation for the first 3 years. It is expected that approximately 70 awards will be made annually. Under the PREA program, the U of T had a success rate of approximately 31% (relative to an overall provincial success rate of 25%) and garnered one-third of total funding over the life of the program.
The Province’s deadline is January 26, 2006 – a very short timeline. In order to assist in strengthening the applications, the GRIP Office has prepared a “tips” document (attached). The internal deadline is January
16 for administrative review, institutional endorsement and submission to the Province. Further information, including details on required elements of the application package, is available at the URL noted above. We urge divisions to perform internal peer review of these proposals prior to submission, to enhance the potential for success.
Questions regarding the ERA program, forms or forms submission process may be addressed to contact Scott Shank in the GRIP office, (firstname.lastname@example.org or 416-946-0447).
Please bring this funding opportunity to the attention of eligible faculty members in your division. We look forward to assisting your promising young faculty to be successful in this program.
