|RE:||Connaught New Staff Matching Grants for New Faculty|
Further to Vice-President John Challis’ memo of September 6th regarding Connaught Fund programs for 2006-2007, this is a reminder that the deadline for the Connaught New Staff Matching Grants program is December 1, 2005.
This program is an opportunity to provide significant internal resources, on a competitive basis, to help launch new, junior faculty and to increase their competitiveness for external funding. The
Connaught Fund will provide successful applicants with funding up to a maximum of $30,000 per applicant. Awards greater than $10,000 require a matching contribution from the applicant's University department or faculty. The match needs to be at least 50% of the award amount exceeding $10,000. For example, a New Staff Matching Grant of $15,000 exceeds the matching threshold by $5,000. The matching contribution needs to be at least $2,500 (50% of $5,000). Departmental funds considered eligible for the match are real dollars allocated from the University department's operating budget, or other discretionary funds. These include funds placed at the disposal of the applicant at any time
since the appointment start-date. (Funds allocated by an affiliated hospital department or hospital research institute are not eligible matching funds). Approximately $1M will be allocated to this program.
Last year the Committee received one hundred applications requesting over $2.5M in support. Fourty-five awards were made for total program expenditure just over $1 M (45% success rate in terms of number of awards versus number of applications).
