USWA Legal Strike Position
I am writing to advise you that the United Steelworkers, Local 1998, representing the University’s staff-appointed administrative personnel, are in a legal strike position effective 12:01 on Monday September 12 which is the first day of classes.
Although negotiations will be continuing over the weekend in an effort to reach a fair and reasonable collective agreement, in the event that there is a strike the University will continue to operate and to do its very best to make the return to classes a positive experience. This means that faculty and non-USW staff-appointed personnel will be expected to work as usual throughout the duration of any strike. We have written to the leaders of our other employee groups advising them of this.
It is possible that picketing may occur at various locations. Lawful picketing may only be informational and may not block access or exit. We expect that any picketers would honour these requirements. In the unlikely event that there are picket line problems that create safety concerns, those affected should immediately contact campus police and their department Chair.
Updates will be available via the University’s homepage as they become necessary.
Thank you for your help in ensuring the continuity of our services to our students.
