|Re:||National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE)|
I am writing to advise you that at the February 22 meeting of the University Affairs Board (UAB) I will be presenting a report on the University of Toronto’s participation in the National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE). A copy of the report entitled “Measuring UP” is available at http://www.utoronto.ca/govcncl/bac/details/ua/2004-05/uaa20050222-03ii.pdf
In addition, a story entitled “New survey helps focus efforts to enhance student experience”, is available on the News@UofT page at http://www.news.utoronto.ca/bin6/050211-979.asp
The primary motivation in bringing the NSSE to U of T was not to compare ourselves to other institutions but rather to help us identify and measure the results of specific and strategic initiatives over time. To this end, staff in the Office of the Vice-Provost, Planning and Budget and the Office of Student Affairs have been analysing the results in the context of the University’s academic planning framework “Stepping UP”.
“Measuring UP” summarizes some of the key NSSE results in relation to the student experience objectives presented in the academic plan and identifies areas where NSSE data could be explored further to help isolate problems and design effective interventions. In short, the report is the first step in a longer process of understanding our survey results.
There will be a full briefing on NSSE at our PDAD&C meeting on March 10, 2005. In the meantime, should you have any questions please contact me.
