RE: University Professors:  Nominations

I am writing to call for nominations for University Professors.  The designation of University Professor recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement and pre-eminence in a particular field of knowledge.  The number of active University Professors is at the discretion of the University Professor Selection Committee, but should not exceed 2% of the tenured faculty.

I would encourage you to bring forward the names of colleagues whose achievements are truly outstanding for this very special form of recognition by the University.

The Selection Committee is chaired by the Provost and is composed of six internal University of Toronto members and two members from other universities.  The membership of the committee shall be made up of distinguished scholars and shall be as broadly based as possible.  The Selection Committee is appointed by the President and its membership is reported by the Provost to Academic Board.

The Selection Procedures for University Professors as well as a Nomination Package Check-List are available at http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/English/University-Professors.html.

 The nomination package should contain:

  1. A single cover letter with at least six signatures from at least two departments within the University.  The cover letter should (1.) outline the main reasons why the nominee should be considered for a University Professorship and (2.) list the names of the referees and the reasons why these scholars were chosen
  2. Letters from at least two, but no more than five, scholars of international standing in the nominee’s field from outside the University. These referees should be asked to comment not only on the impact, but also on the specific nature of the candidate’s most influential contributions.  The reference letters should be addressed to the Provost as Chair of the Selection Committee but they should be submitted to the individual who is putting together the nomination package.  A signed hard-copy of each letter must be in the completed nomination package.   Please note that referees should not send letters directly to the Office of the Vice-President and Provost.
  3. A 500 – 750 word biography.  [This biography will be used as the basis for the public document in the event that the nominee is appointed a University Professor.]
  4. A full up-to-date curriculum vitae and a short, non-technical description of the nominee’s research contributions.  Complete nomination packages should be submitted to the Office of the
    Vice-President and Provost (see Check-List – http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/English/University-Professors.html ).

Nomination packages should be sent to the attention of Sheree Drummond, Assistant Provost, Room 225, Simcoe Hall, no later than Wednesday, February 23, 2005.
