RE:   Update on Changes in the Provost's Office

I am very pleased to tell you of the following new appointments in the Provost's office:

  1. At its February 14th meeting Governing Council approved my recommendation that Professor Vivek Goel be appointed Deputy Provost, a position that he will hold conjointly with his current position of Vice-Provost, Faculty. I believe this appointment will better reflect his responsibilities for policy development within the Provost's office and his key role in assisting me in the planning exercise that we are just beginning. In addition, Professor Goel will deputize for me during my absences.
  2. Governing Council also approved my recommendation that Professor Safwat Zaky be appointed to the position of Vice-Provost, Planning and Budget, to succeed Professor Derek McCammond on July 1, 2003. Professor Zaky is currently Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a position he has held for ten years. Professor Zaky has earned an excellent reputation for his superb leadership of ECE during a time in which the Department has doubled in size and has faced fierce and sustained competition in its field. I am delighted that he has accepted this position. But, it is also with regret that we must say goodbye to Professor McCammond. I have greatly appreciated his keen strategic sense and vigilant and steady handling of the Planning and Budget portfolio over the months that I have worked with him. We will miss him.
  3. In my memorandum to you in January, I mentioned that I would be creating two new administrative positions, that of Assistant Provost and Special Assistant and that of Executive Assistant to the Deputy Provost. I am very pleased to tell you that Lesley Lewis has accepted the position of Assistant Provost and Special Assistant and Denise Williams has accepted the position of Executive Assistant to the Deputy Provost.

The reorganization undertaken in the Provost office has resulted in the elimination of 1.5 administrative positions, including the position of Assistant Vice-Provost, Professional Faculties, which was previously held by Lesley Lewis. The Assistant Vice-Provosts, Lynn Snowden and Carol Robb, will be sharing responsibility for the faculties in this portfolio. Lynn Snowden will assume Assistant Vice-provostial responsibility for the Faculties of Architecture, Landscape and Design, Forestry, and Music and for the Rotman School of Management. Carol Robb will assume responsibility for the Faculties of Applied Science and Engineering, Information Studies, Law, OISE/UT and Social Work and for the School of Continuing Studies.
