RE:   Extension of Appointment of Principal David Clandfield

I am very pleased to announce that, at its meeting yesterday, the Academic Board approved an extension of the term of Professor David Clandfield, Principal of New College. Professor Clandfield was appointed Principal of New College for a seven year term for the period July 1, 1996 through June 30, 2003. His term has now been extended to June 30, 2006.

Professor Clandfield has done an outstanding job as Principal. He guided the College through the Raising Our Sights process and is working vigorously to implement the plan. He has been extremely involved in the planning of the residence expansion at New College. His continuing involvement in this project is critical to its successful completion. For all of these reasons, I recommended an extension of his appointment to the Academic Board. Prior to seeking the Board's approval, I discussed the proposal with New College Council and the Dean of Arts and Science and had their full support.

I am very grateful to Professor Clandfield for agreeing to extend his term to help the College meet the important challenges facing it over the next five years and know that he will have your enthusiastic support.
